Sheffield Eagles v Barrow Raiders
On Sunday 12th February the Sheffield Eagles played their second game of the 2023 season, away to Barrow Raiders.
We look back to the first time that Sheffield Eagles and Barrow Raiders played each other on each other on 30th April 1986.
The first game against each other
Sheffield Eagles and Barrow Raiders played each other for the first time on 30th April 1986 towards the end of the Eagles' second season - 1985/86.
It was an away game with the Eagles losing 32-8, with two unconverted tries by Roy Rafferty and John Glancy, in front of a crowd of 1,520.
We don't have a record of the team that day but because of a fixture backlog there were 6 games in April, with the Eagles winning the first three and losing the last three - all against Cumbrian teams. The Eagles then played Barrow again just over a week later (7th May) in front of a crowd of 600 at Owlerton Stadium in the last match of the season. The Eagles lost again 21-1, narrowly avoiding being nilled thanks to a drop goal from Daryl Powell. The Eagles finished that season 12th out of 18, an improvement from 17th in their first season.
