Sheffield Eagles v Bradford Bulls

On Sunday 19th March the Sheffield Eagles play their next game of the 2023 season, away to Bradford Bulls.

We look back to the first time that Sheffield Eagles played Bradford Bulls.

The first game against each other

Sheffield Eagles and Bradford Bulls (or Bradford Northern as they were known then) played each other for the first time on 24th November 1985 in the Eagles' second season. This wasn't in the league but in the first round of the John Player Special Trophy. The game at Owlerton Stadium saw the Eagles lose 24-16, in front of a crowd of 1,342.

Try scorers that day were Scott Wright, Daryl Powell and Gary Hetherington with Roy Rafferty scoring two goals.

This was the first of a number of times over the following years that Sheffield and Bradford were drawn against each other in cup competitions.
