Sheffield Eagles v Swinton Lions

On Friday 17th April the Sheffield Eagles play their next game of the 2023 season, home to Swinton Lions

We look back to the first time that Sheffield Eagles played Swinton Lions

The first game against each other

Sheffield Eagles and Swinton Lions played each other for the first time on 23rd January 1985, the Eagles first season. It was an away game played at Bolton FC - Burnden Park.

The Eagles lost the game 14-8 with a try and two goals from Arnold Hema, in a rearranged match in freezing conditions.

In the book Against the Odds the match was described as follows:

Eagles were about to make a small piece of sporting history. They were scheduled to play the first ever RL game at Burnden Park, Bolton, against Swinton in a January midweek fixture. The journey was like something out of Keystone Cops. The bus broke down at Ossett and the players transferred to a fleet of cars. The M62 was experiencing a whiteout and in Lancashire the police closed the motorway. After numerous diversions and wrong options we eventually got to the ground after the scheduled kick off time. The players had changed in the cars and arrived in two and threes and when we had enough the game started 20 minutes late. Needless to say we lost 14-8 and we lost in the return match which was also a RL match at another soccer ground - this time at Millmoor, home of Rotherham United
