David signed for the Sheffield Eagles in 1989 from Crigglestone ARLFC, on his 17th birthday. After impressing in training and in the Wigan Sevens tournament he was immediately brought into the first team making his debut against St Helens, playing at stand-off. He was the youngest player in the First Division that season and quickly established himself in the Eagles team, being named the Open Rugby Magazine Shooting Star for November 1989. As well as playing at stand-off David also had a key role as a goalkicker, becoming the 9th top goalkicker in the Club’s history and the 9th top points scorer of all time. A serious injury towards the end of the 1992-93 season saw him out of the game for 14 months before re-establishing himself and becoming top points scorer for the Club in the 1994-95 season. His various halfback pairings meant he was at the heart of the play for the Eagles. He guided them to wins in many of the key games of that era with a commitment and work ethic that endeared him to fans.
